U.S. College Sports Recruiting Timeline A Guide for Parents

Learn what international parents should do (and when) to support their child’s U.S. college sports journey. From 9th grade to senior year, this guide explains eligibility, communication rules, and essential deadlines.

Why Timing Matters? Especially for International Families

The U.S. college sports recruitment process is layered with rules, deadlines, and cultural nuances. For international families, additional barriers include time zones, visa timelines, transcript evaluations, and limited in-person access to U.S. coaches.

Early preparation and understanding what to do at each stage can make the difference between missing an opportunity and unlocking one.

1st Year of High School (Freshman Year): Establish the Academic and Athletic Foundation

  • Eligibility officially begins. Encourage your child to maintain strong grades and track their core courses, especially in English, math, and science.
  • Start saving game footage, even if it's raw.
  • Understand the differences between NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and junior colleges.

2nd Year of High School (Sophomore Year): Build a Recruiting Foundation

  • Academics remain critical. NCAA expects 10 core courses completed by junior year.
  • Use Spotter to build a recruiting profile and track coach interest. Parents can help organize transcripts and upload videos.
  • June 15: NCAA D1 and D2 coaches can start direct contact in many sports.

3rd Year of High School (Junior Year): The Most Crucial Year

4th Year of High School (Senior Year): Decision Time

  • Finalize applications, respond to offers, and attend official visits.
  • Handle financial aid discussions and visa paperwork.
  • Submit transcripts in native language and certified English.

What College Coaches Expect from Parents

  • Support from the background. Let your child lead the communication.
  • Focus on maturity, independence, and respectful interactions. Avoid speaking on your child’s behalf.

Eligibility Requirements & Final Deadlines

  • NCAA Certification Account: $160. Register here.
  • NAIA Registration: $160. Register here.
  • SAT/ACT: Complete by spring of junior year. Send scores directly.
  • Transcripts: Submit in native language + certified English.
  • Visa Process: Start early in senior year to avoid delays.

Final Thought: Your Role Is Strategic, Not Central

You don’t need to lead every step.

Support, prepare, and guide — but let your child take ownership of their journey.

With planning and the right tools, college sports in the U.S. is absolutely within reach.
